Every American with a Prime account is living a double life. There's the version of you that exists in daylight — sensible, financially responsible, a person who eats breakfast and reads their credit card statements. And then there's the 2 AM version of you, phone glowing in the dark, adding a $340 standing desk converter to a cart that already contains a ukulele, a 48-pack of silicone ice cube trays, and something called a "gravity blanket deluxe."

Your Amazon cart is not a shopping list. It is a crime scene. And we are here to rank every single item in it, from "okay, fine, that's actually reasonable" all the way down to "please log off and drink some water."

S-Tier: The Stuff You Actually Needed (But Added at the Worst Possible Time)

Let's start with a little grace. Some of the things in your cart are legitimately useful. A new shower curtain liner. Dish soap in bulk. A phone charger because yours is literally held together with a rubber band and a prayer. These items deserve to be purchased. They deserve to be freed from cart purgatory.

But here's the thing — you didn't add them during the day like a normal person. You added them at 2 AM because you were lying in bed and suddenly, viscerally, remembered that your shower curtain has been developing its own ecosystem for four months. The item is fine. The timing is a little concerning. S-Tier, but please seek help.

A-Tier: The Organizational Products You'll Use For Two Weeks

Ah yes. The drawer organizers. The cable management kit. The color-coded label maker. The stackable pantry bins with the little chalkboard stickers so you can write "PASTA" on the pasta bin like you're running a boutique Italian grocery.

You added these items because at 2 AM, you had a vision. A clean vision. A version of your apartment where everything had a place and that place was labeled and the labels were in your own handwriting and guests would come over and say "wow, you really have it together."

Reality check: you have used a label maker exactly once in your life. The label said "STUFF" and it was on a box of stuff. These items will arrive, get placed on a shelf, and become the new clutter. A-Tier for the optimism. F-Tier for the follow-through.

B-Tier: The Fitness Equipment Phase

Every Amazon cart has at least one fitness item added between midnight and 3 AM. Resistance bands. A jump rope. One of those ab rollers that looks like a wheel of cheese and destroys your wrists. Maybe a yoga mat in a color you don't own any workout clothes to match.

This is the tier of intentions. You were not buying exercise equipment. You were buying a feeling — specifically, the feeling of being the kind of person who works out at home. The bands will arrive in a small bag. You will place them in a drawer. They will remain there until you move, at which point you will throw them away without ever removing them from the packaging.

B-Tier. We respect the fantasy.

C-Tier: The Kitchen Gadget You Saw on a Cooking Video

Somewhere between the fourth TikTok recipe and the seventh YouTube Shorts, you decided you needed a mandoline slicer. Or a pasta attachment for a KitchenAid you don't own. Or one of those avocado tools with four separate functions that could all be performed by a regular knife.

You do not cook like this. You cook like a person who microwaves things and occasionally makes scrambled eggs. But at 2 AM, watching someone julienne a carrot with the precision of a surgeon, you believed — truly believed — that the only thing standing between you and culinary greatness was the right equipment.

The mandoline will either sit unused in a cabinet or send you to urgent care. There is no middle ground. C-Tier.

D-Tier: The Hobby Starter Kit for a Hobby You've Never Done

Painting supplies for someone who last painted in third grade. A beginner's woodworking kit. Calligraphy pens. A telescope. A telescope, as if you live somewhere you can actually see the sky and as if you have any idea what you're looking for.

This is the tier of pure, uncut delusion, and we say that with love. At 2 AM, every hobby looks achievable. You will not become a watercolor artist. You will not build a birdhouse. You will add the item, feel briefly inspired, and then fall asleep before you can remove it from the cart.

The cart is your dream journal. D-Tier.

F-Tier: The Completely Inexplicable Items

A full taxidermy kit. A 200-count bag of googly eyes. An air horn. A book titled something like The Complete Guide to Competitive Duck Herding. A decorative sword. A novelty toilet decal. Five pounds of freeze-dried astronaut ice cream.

We are not here to judge you. We are here to document you. These items exist in your cart because the human brain, deprived of sleep and scrolling in the dark, will eventually arrive somewhere deeply strange. You don't know why you need 200 googly eyes. You will never know. The important thing is that they're there, they've been there since March, and some part of you keeps deciding not to remove them.

F-Tier. Legendary status. Do not delete them. They are the truest version of you.

The Cart Is Not the Destination. The Cart Is the Journey.

Here's the thing nobody tells you about Amazon carts: they're not meant to be emptied. They're meant to be visited. You scroll through them like a museum of your past selves — the self who was going to get organized, the self who was going to learn guitar, the self who was going to make homemade pasta at 11 PM on a Wednesday.

The cart is hope. The cart is ambition. The cart is a $78 essential oil diffuser shaped like a mushroom that you will absolutely never purchase but also will absolutely never remove.

Leave it there. It's doing something important.
